MP Lori Idlout says Liberal failures are to blame for delayed Nunavut Land Use Plan

IQALUIT – NDP MP for Nunavut Lori Idlout is calling out the Liberals for failing Inuit by not delivering on the Nunavut Land Use Plan (NLUP). Idlout says that the Liberals’ delays are why this hasn’t gone forward, and that New Democrats would do things differently.

“The Liberals have failed Nunavummiut for generations and this delay is a continuation of their colonial policies. The Liberal let downs didn’t start with Justin Trudeau, and it won’t end with him either,” said Idlout. “Finalizing the Nunavut Land Use Plan would mean Inuit can use their culture towards economic independence and to protect the environment. It is the final requirement of the 1993 Nunavut Agreement. The Liberals could have gotten it done, but as usual they’re too selfish, and focused on themselves rather than uplift Inuit people and Nunavut.”

The NLUP creates opportunities for young people to learn skills, build careers and provide opportunities for their families and communities based on their own self-determination. Idlout wrote to the Liberals on this matter in the fall. They never responded. Despite repeated calls from MP Idlout and the Friends of Land Use Planning, the Liberals have delayed approving the plan for over a year.

“The Liberals failed enough times, they don’t deserve another chance,” Idlout added. “And Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives are only focused on one thing –cutting services needed in the North to put more money in the pockets of their billionaire buddies. The NDP would do things differently. We will get this done.”
