NDP Statement on National Indigenous Peoples Day

NDP critic for Indigenous Affairs Lori Idlout issued the following statement:

"Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, New Democrats join communities across Canada in celebrating the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

This day is an opportunity to honour the strength and leadership of Indigenous communities, and to recognize the deep injustices they continue to face. From unceded lands and broken treaties to the intergenerational trauma of residential schools and forced relocation and the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S), Canada must do more than acknowledge its colonial past—we must act.

We cannot ignore the ongoing injustices being committed by the current Liberal government. Their mega project legislation, Bill C-5, threatens to violate the government’s constitutional obligation to obtain the free, prior, and informed consent of Indigenous peoples. It is not too late to fix this bill—instead of pushing it through Parliament without meaningful consultation with Indigenous communities, the government must pause and do the work of respectful, genuine engagement.

The path to reconciliation must be one of justice and truth. That means fully implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action and the 231 Calls for Justice from the MMIWG2S report. It means ending systemic discrimination in housing, healthcare, education, and child welfare. And it means respecting Indigenous sovereignty and upholding the right to free, prior, and informed consent.

New Democrats are committed to working in true partnership with Indigenous peoples—supporting self-determination, protecting languages and cultures, and ensuring Indigenous voices are heard at every level of government.

On this day of reflection and celebration, New Democrats reaffirm our commitment to reconciliation rooted in action, not just words. Together, we can build a future grounded in justice, dignity, and mutual respect.

Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day."
