NDP MP Idlout urges government to fulfill obligations to First Nation Children
OTTAWA – NDP MP Lori Idlout asked the Liberal Minister of Indigenous Affairs to meet with the National Children’s Chiefs Commission (NCCC) and stop the discrimination against First Nation children.
Since the election, the Government has not met with the NCCC to discuss forming a national deal to reform the First Nations child welfare system, instead asking the tribunal to apply an agreement made with Ontario Chiefs to all First Nations throughout the country.
“This government fails to realize that what works for First Nations in Ontario, is very different than what works for First Nations in other parts of the country,” added Idlout. “And the government’s response of ignoring any other option is disrespectful to the National Children’s Chiefs Commission.”
The NCCC, as the expert, is wanting a national agreement to ensure that all First Nation children are able to get the support and care they need, no matter where they live. A tribunal order dictates that Canada must come up with a plan to end the discrimination against First Nation Children by December 22nd of this year.
“While New Democrats are working hard in Parliament, it’s disappointing to see the Liberal Minister continuing their discrimination against First Nations children,” added Idlout. “I will always speak up for Indigenous children to get the care they deserve.”
