NDP's Idlout standing up for Inuit kids as funding for supports sunset
Read Lori Idlout's letter to the Mayors
NUNAVUT – On Monday, NDP MP Lori Idlout (Nunavut) wrote to the mayors in Nunavut concerning the Inuit Child First Initiative (ICFI) funding that seems to be sunsetting at the end of March. The letter outlines the advocacy she is doing to extend the program.
“I have urged Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) and the minister to extend the program,” stated Idlout. “It appears that none of our voices matter to the prime minister and to Minister Hadju, who are ignoring all of us. I brought up the issue again with Minister Anandasangaree as he replaced Minister Vandal as Minister responsible for Northern Affairs.
I expressed my concerns about Minister Hadju’s lack of response and proposed that the government, at a minimum, must extend the funding commitment for at least one year with a commitment to review a replacement of the program. A review could lead to a permanent replacement program.”
ICFI is critical for the well-being of Inuit children and families, with over 13,000 Inuit kids enrolled.
“I won’t give up and will advocate for Inuit children to have the supports they are owed,” Idlout added. My team and I will continue to press the federal government for answers on funding for ICFI. I promise to keep you in the loop on our progress and will keep working hard."
